Description
Iceland 1000 kronur 2001 UNC
This pristine 1000 Krónur banknote from Iceland, issued under the law of 22 May 2001 by the Central Bank of Iceland (Seðlabanki Íslands), is in Uncirculated (UNC) condition—perfect, crisp, with no signs of wear, folds, or handling marks. Part of the modern series introduced in the early 2000s, it showcases vibrant purple, yellow, and multicolored designs with advanced security features like a segmented security thread, latent images, UV elements, and a watermark of Jón Sigurðsson.
The obverse features a dignified half-portrait of Brynjólfur Sveinsson (1605–1675), the influential Lutheran Bishop of Skálholt, holding a Bible. He is celebrated for his pivotal role in preserving Old Norse literature by collecting and safeguarding ancient manuscripts, including key contributions to knowledge of the Poetic Edda and supporting poets like Hallgrímur Pétursson. The background incorporates intricate patterns inspired by a historic bedspread from the National Museum and chapel motifs, with the denomination boldly displayed.
The reverse depicts the historic Brynjólfskirkja church at Skálholt (from the 17th century), shown in elevation and cross-section, alongside an image of the Madonna from a gold ring owned by the bishop—tying directly to his legacy in Icelandic ecclesiastical and cultural history.
Measuring approximately 150 x 70 mm, this note (Pick 59 or similar variant) is a beautiful testament to Iceland’s rich heritage of scholarship, religion, and manuscript preservation. Ideal for world banknote collectors, numismatists interested in Scandinavian currency, or those fascinated by Iceland’s literary and historical figures. Still legal tender in Iceland (though often collected rather than spent).
