Finland 10 Markkaa 1945 banknote

This classic Finland 10 Markkaa banknote from 1945, issued by Suomen Pankki (Bank of Finland / Finlands Bank), is part of the post-WWII series (often cataloged as Pick 85 or P-85 in Standard Catalog of World Paper Money). Printed in vibrant red with intricate geometric patterns, the obverse centers on a stylized pine tree (symbolizing Finnish resilience, nature, and national strength), encircled by a wreath-like border. The denomination “KYMMENEN MARKKAA” (Finnish) and “TIO MARK” (Swedish) appears on the sides, with “10” prominently at corners and center.

The reverse features the Finnish coat of arms (lion rampant with sword and crown) within a wreath of spruce branches, framed by decorative interlaced ornaments and bordered in red lattice patterns—emphasizing national identity and heraldry. Dated 1945 (with some variants issued/printed into 1948).

Issued during Finland’s recovery from World War II (after the Continuation War and Lapland War, amid reparations to the Soviet Union), these notes were essential in everyday transactions and reflect the era’s economic stabilization. A beautiful example of mid-20th-century Nordic design for collectors of Finnish banknotes, Scandinavian currency, tree/allegorical motifs, or WWII-era paper money.
