Description
Iceland 1972 Fischer Spassky first day cover
This historic first day cover (FDC) commemorates the legendary 1972 World Chess Championship match between Bobby Fischer (USA) and Boris Spassky (USSR), held in Reykjavík, Iceland, from July to August 1972—the “Match of the Century” that captured global attention during the Cold War.
The envelope features a striking cachet illustration of the Laugardalshöll sports hall (the match venue) with portraits of Fischer and Spassky above it, printed by the Icelandic Chess Federation (Skáksamband Íslands). It bears the official 15 króna commemorative stamp depicting a chessboard globe with crown and knight, postmarked Reykjavík 20.VIII.1972 (August 20, 1972) with the special circular cancellation “HEIMSMEISTARAEINHVIGI Í SKÁK” (World Chess Championship) and crown motif. The cover is numbered “Nr. 6091” in the lower left, indicating it is from a limited official series produced by the federation.
