Description

Collection of black and white caricature illustrations cut from Icelandic newspapers during the 1972 World Chess Championship match in Reykjavík. Drawn by Icelandic artist Halldór Pétursson (1911–1976), the scenes satirically depict Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky along with seconds, officials, and symbolic elements such as knights, crowns, animals, tennis rackets, cars, and eagles. Many include printed chess stamps, Reykjavík postmarks dated 1972, and text including the FIDE motto “GENS UNA SUMUS”. The cutouts show detailed line drawings with humorous commentary on the Match of the Century.
