The front is boldly marked “NORGE 1979” and features a powerful raised water bird moving through a stylized landscape. Turn it over and the design becomes much more minimalist, combining a bird with elegant botanical forms and Rosing’s signature.

Norway 1979 bronze medal

Bronze art medal from Norway, 1979, issued by Anders Nyborg A/S as part of the Nordisk Kunstmedalje Serie (Nordic Art Medal Series).

The medal was designed by Jens Rosing (1925–2008), a Greenlandic artist, author and illustrator. Rosing designed the 1979 national medals in this Nordic series. The medal is signed “Jens Rosing” on the reverse.

The obverse is inscribed “NORGE 1979” and features a large, highly raised water bird in a stylized landscape. The reverse has a minimalist sculptural composition featuring a bird and botanical/plant elements, together with the artist’s signature Jens Rosing.

The medal is made of bronze and measures 70 mm in diameter. It was manufactured by Kultateollisuus, Finland, for Anders Nyborg A/S. The Nordic Art Medal Series was issued in limited, individually numbered editions; the 1979 medals were issued in editions of 5,000.

The Nordisk Kunstmedalje Serie was a major Scandinavian art-medal project that ran from the 1970s into the 1980s. The annual national medals represented the Nordic countries and territories, including Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

For 1979, Jens Rosing designed the national medals for Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The series records specifically identify the 1979 Norway medal as Norge – Jens Rosing.
