Pair of Vintage Icelandic Police Uniform Buttons – Gold-Plated Brass with Hand Motif

112 $

These gold-plated brass buttons once fastened the tunics of Lögreglan officers patrolling Reykjavík streets in the decades after WWII. That striking open-hand design—palm out, fingers extended—wasn’t just decoration: it stood for the promise every Icelandic police officer made—to protect, to serve impartially, and to extend a helping hand when needed.

Vintage Icelandic police buttons

This is a matching pair of vintage uniform buttons used by Icelandic police (Lögreglan). The buttons are made of gold-plated brass with a domed, circular design. Each features a raised, detailed relief of an open right hand (palm facing forward, fingers extended) emerging from a cuff or sleeve, finely engraved with lines for texture. The buttons have fixed posts with loop shanks on the back for sewing onto uniforms. They measure approximately 2 cm in diameter and show typical age-related patina and minor wear on the gold plating.

These hand-symbol buttons are characteristic of mid-20th-century Icelandic police tunic or greatcoat insignia, symbolizing authority, protection, or oath of service.
