1972 Fischer Spassky giant postcard

This is a large-format (“giant”) commemorative postcard issued by the Icelandic Chess Federation for the 1972 World Chess Championship match between Boris Spassky (USSR) and Bobby Fischer (USA) held in Reykjavík.

The front features a collage of six numbered color photographs surrounding a central chessboard with a red knight piece:

  1. Modern Reykjavík city view
  2. Geysir erupting (Geysir area, South Iceland)
  3. Gullfoss waterfall
  4. Old part of Reykjavík
  5. Volcanic eruption near Mt. Hekla in 1970
  6. Skaftafell National Park with Öræfajökull glacier (219 m high) in background

Above the collage is a yellow banner with text in Russian and English: “МАТЧ НА ПЕРВЕНСТВО МИРА ПО ШАХМАТАМ / THE WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH 1972”. Portraits of Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer are included with flags.

The back includes the 15 króna chess stamp cancelled with the Reykjavík 29.VIII.1972 postmark in the circular “HEIMSMEISTARAEINHVIGI Í SKÁK” cancellation. Text is multilingual (Icelandic, English, German, Russian) listing the six scenes. It credits printing by LITBRÁ (offset) in Iceland, published in cooperation with the Icelandic Chess Federation.

A scarce oversized philatelic souvenir from the historic event.
