Iceland 1972 Fischer Spassky chess medal

This official commemorative medal was issued by the Icelandic Chess Federation (Skáksamband Íslands) to mark the 1972 World Chess Championship between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky, held in Reykjavík—the famous “Match of the Century.” Struck in copper, the medal is housed in a protective acrylic case with a wooden-style backing for display.

  • Obverse: Portraits of Fischer and Spassky facing each other across a chessboard, with their names “Spassky” and “Fischer” inscribed below. The design is signed by artist Bárður Jóhannesson.
  • Reverse: Central FIDE logo, text “WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP REYKJAVIK 1972”, and the Icelandic Chess Federation emblem. Encircling inscriptions note the event and issuer.

The medal is numbered “2486” on the case, from a limited edition (production run noted around 3200 pieces in related issues, struck by Stakur Koparpenningar). It is accompanied by descriptive text in Icelandic on the case back, crediting Bárður Jóhannesson for design and minting.

A significant piece of chess history and Icelandic numismatic memorabilia, celebrating Iceland’s role in hosting one of the most iconic sporting events of the 20th century.
