1972 Fischer Spassky postcard Halldór Pétursson

This is a commemorative postcard issued by Skáksamband Íslands (Icelandic Chess Federation) for the 1972 World Chess Championship match between Boris Spassky (USSR) and Bobby Fischer (USA) held in Reykjavík.

The front features a watercolor-style illustration by artist Halldór Pétursson showing Spassky and Fischer seated at a chess table in modern chairs, with a large blue-and-red banner overhead reading “GENS UNA SUMUS” (FIDE motto: “We are one family”) alongside the Icelandic Chess Federation logo and FIDE emblem. The scene captures the tension of the match with thoughtful expressions and a chessboard between them.

It credits the artist Halldór Pétursson and printing by LITBRÁ (offset) in Iceland, with “No. 2” in the series.

A rare artistic souvenir from the “Match of the Century”.
