Iceland 500 Kronur UNC 1968(1961)

This classic Iceland 500 Krónur banknote, issued under the law of 29 March 1961 by the Seðlabanki Íslands (Central Bank of Iceland), features a striking design in green tones with pink and multicolored underprint elements.

The obverse showcases a dignified portrait of Hannes Hafstein (1861–1922), Iceland’s first Prime Minister (1904–1909) under Danish rule, a key figure in the push for Icelandic autonomy, home rule advocate, and poet. His stern, mustachioed likeness anchors the left side, with intricate guilloche patterns, floral motifs, and the denomination in ornate Icelandic script (“FIMMM HUNDDRUD KRÓNUR”).

The reverse depicts a scenic view of fishermen at sea or related maritime elements (typical for this denomination in the 1961 series, emphasizing Iceland’s fishing heritage and economy), framed by geometric borders and security features like microprinting and latent images.

Measuring standard size for the era (approximately 160 x 80 mm), this high-denomination note from the pre-1981 króna era (before redenomination) is a testament to Iceland’s mid-20th-century economic growth and national pride. A sought-after piece for collectors of world paper money, Scandinavian banknotes, or items honoring Iceland’s political pioneers—still a striking example of classic engraving artistry.
