Iceland 10 aurar 1939 coin

This is an Icelandic 10 aurar coin dated 1939, issued during the reign of King Christian X (as King of Iceland under the Danish union until 1944). Struck in copper-nickel alloy, it weighs 3.5 grams and measures 23 mm in diameter with a reeded edge.

  • Obverse: Crowned monogram of King Christian X (interlaced “C” and Roman numeral “X” beneath a crown). Encircling legend “ÍSLANDS KONUNGUR” (King of Iceland). Mint marks include “HCN” (mint master Hans Christian Nielsen) and “GJ” (engraver Gunnar Jensen) from the Copenhagen Mint.
  • Reverse: Denomination “10” in the center flanked by floral ornaments, with “ÍSLAND” above and “AURAR” below.

This coin belongs to the series KM# 4 (or KM# 4.1 variant), minted from 1922–1942. It was part of Iceland’s early decimal coinage under the Danish crown (100 aurar = 1 króna). A classic entry-level piece for collectors of Icelandic coinage, Scandinavian minors, Christian X issues, or pre-independence Nordic numismatics.
