Iceland 10 aurar 1940 coin

This is an Icelandic 10 aurar coin dated 1940, issued during the reign of King Christian X (as King of Iceland under the Danish union until 1944). Struck in copper-nickel alloy, it weighs 3.5 grams and measures 23 mm in diameter with a reeded edge.

  • Obverse: Crowned monogram of King Christian X (interlaced “C” and Roman numeral “X” beneath a crown), flanked by the split date “19” and “40”. Encircling legend “ÍSLANDS KONUNGUR” (King of Iceland). Mint marks include “HCN” (mint master Hans Christian Nielsen) and “GJ” (engraver Gunnar Jensen) from the Copenhagen Mint.
  • Reverse: Denomination “10” in the center flanked by floral ornaments, with “ÍSLAND” above and “AURAR” below.

This coin belongs to the series KM# 4 (or KM# 4.1 variant), minted from 1922–1942. It was part of Iceland’s early decimal coinage under the Danish crown (100 aurar = 1 króna). A classic entry-level piece for collectors of Icelandic coinage, Scandinavian minors, Christian X issues, or pre-independence Nordic numismatics.
