Description
Iceland 10 Krónur 1928 Landsbanki banknote
This historic Iceland 10 Krónur banknote, issued under the law of 15 April 1928 by Landsbanki Íslands (National Bank of Iceland), features a classic design in green tones with intricate Celtic/Viking knotwork borders. The obverse shows a dignified right-facing profile portrait of King Christian X (1870–1947), who reigned over Denmark and Iceland during the period of Danish-Icelandic union (until Iceland’s full independence in 1944). He is depicted in military uniform with epaulettes and decorations, symbolizing the era’s royal authority.
The reverse illustrates a powerful allegorical figure of a seated woman representing Iceland (often interpreted as the personification of the nation or guardian spirit), crowned and armored, holding a sword in one hand and a shield in the other, with a falcon perched on her arm—drawing from Norse mythology and Iceland’s coat of arms elements (the four landvættir guardians include a falcon). She sits atop a rocky outcrop by the sea, framed by elaborate knotwork circles, emphasizing Iceland’s Viking heritage and rugged independence.
Printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. (BWC), this note measures standard size for the era (approximately 130–140 x 80 mm) and shows signs of circulation—folds, edge tears, minor soiling, and fraying consistent with age and use—but remains intact with good detail retention. A key piece from Iceland’s interwar period currency, before the Central Bank (Seðlabanki Íslands) took over in 1961. Ideal for collectors of Scandinavian banknotes, royal portrait issues, early 20th-century Icelandic paper money, or Viking-themed designs.
