Iceland 1972 Fischer Spassky Viking cover

This limited-edition commemorative envelope celebrates the 1972 World Chess Championship match between Bobby Fischer (USA) and Boris Spassky (USSR), famously held in Reykjavík, Iceland. Produced in a run of 5000 copies by the Icelandic Chess Federation (Skáksamband Íslands), it is numbered “Nr. 235” in the lower left.

The front features a bold brown line-art cachet of a Viking warrior (bearded, helmeted, holding a spear, standing on rocks) with “1972” above and “ICELAND WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP” below. It bears the official 15 króna commemorative stamp (chessboard globe with crown and knight) cancelled with the special Reykjavík 31.VIII.1972 postmark in the circular “HEIMSMEISTARAEINHVIGI Í SKÁK” cancellation (World Chess Championship in Reykjavík).
