Iceland 1981 proof coin set

This is the official proof coin set issued by the Central Bank of Iceland (Sedlabanki Íslands) in 1981 to introduce the new coinage series of the Republic of Iceland.

The set includes five proof coins mounted on green velvet inside a clear plastic case:

  • 1 króna: Codfish design
  • 5 krónur: Dolphins design
  • 10 aurar: Lobster design
  • 50 aurar: Prawn design
  • 5 aurar: Bird design

The coins are accompanied by a printed information card in English detailing the historical background of Icelandic coinage, the 1981 currency reform (100-fold increase in value), the withdrawal of old coins, and the new designs by Þórður Magnússon (marine animals and bird). The set is housed in a green textured hardcover case with silver-embossed title “LÝÐVELDIÐ ÍSLAND 1981” on the front and “ICELAND 1981” on the back, plus the Central Bank logo on the inside flap.

The set was produced in a limited quantity by the Royal Mint, London, with 15,000 sets issued.
