Iceland 5 aurar 1931 coin

This is an Icelandic 5 aurar coin dated 1931, issued during the reign of King Christian X (as King of Iceland under the Danish union). Struck in bronze at the Copenhagen Mint, it weighs 4 grams and measures 23 mm in diameter with a reeded edge.

  • Obverse: Crowned monogram of King Christian X (interlaced “C” and Roman numeral “X” beneath a crown), flanked by the split date “19” and “31”. Encircling legend “ÍSLANDS KONUNGUR” (King of Iceland). Mint marks include “HCN” (mint master Hans Christian Nielsen) and “GJ” (engraver Gunnar Jensen).
  • Reverse: Large denomination “5” in the center flanked by floral ornaments, with “ÍSLAND” above and “AURAR” below.

The coin belongs to the series KM# 3a, minted from 1925 to 1942 as part of Iceland’s decimal coinage under the Danish crown (100 aurar = 1 króna). It is a standard minor denomination from the pre-independence period.
