1972 Fischer Spassky Iceland silver medal
This is a sterling silver (.925) commemorative medal issued by Skáksamband Íslands (Icelandic Chess Federation) for the 1972 World Chess Championship match between Bobby Fischer (USA) and Boris Spassky (USSR) held in Reykjavík.
The obverse shows a stylized outline map of Iceland with a chess piece motif integrated into the design, inscribed “WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP REYKJAVIK 1972 SKAKSAMBAND ISLANDS”. The medal was designed and produced by Bárður Jóhannesson in Reykjavík. It is housed in a protective plastic sleeve with the original card insert printed in purple and white, stating it is one of a limited edition of 2700 copies in sterling silver (also available in 22kt gold or copper).
